WHOOP : MY 30 DAY ANALYSIS

August 28, 2020

Having WHOOP is like me propping open the engine compartment of my 1985 Westy Vanagon. From the outside, you see the playful classic design, warm caramel color and surfboards tethered to the top. Lean in a little closer though, and the oil leak and water coolant issue are front and center.

How did I miss this?!

Of course I want to keep Salted Carmela in tip-top shape, so no question this needs to be addressed before she can really purrrrr to the beach.

Why is it we will often invest in things like our beloved vehicles, yet push off taking care of our own mental and physical wellness?

I’m officially 30 days into Whoop, and the observations have been a combo of fascinating and jaw dropping. Behaviors that I’ve been trying to modify or improve for years are now front and center with my own personal body data each morning. When you have the data, it’s impossible not to make changes.

If you’re reading this, it’s likely because you prioritize your own wellness, are generally curious or trying to solve for something in your life (sleep issues? alcohol? fatigue?) Oh wait I’ve just shared all of mine.

I’ve been sharing some of my recovery scores, sleep data and goals with you on my insta stories, but wanted to put together a more robust analysis of my personal data and journal entries to share with this trusted community.

If you’re curious about my caffeine and alcohol intake, below are my stats along with some great mental health measures.

So, deep breath, here is a really personal snapshot ‘under my hood…’

QUICK NOTE: Whoop allows you to create a custom journal based on the behaviors in your life. Your journal will not look exactly like mine, and below is only a snapshot of the categories I thought you’d be most interested in. You can also customize and change your journal at any time.

ALCOHOL: YES (17) / NO (12)

CAFFEINE: YES (28) / NO (1)

VIEW A SCREENED DEVICE IN BED: YES (12) / NO (17)

FEEL IN CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE: YES (27) / NO (2)

FEEL YOU HAD THE RESOURCES TO COMPLETE DAILY GOALS: YES (27) / NO (2)

FEEL A SENSE OF PURPOSE: YES (26) / NO (3)

HYDRATE SUFFICIENCY: YES (28) / NO (1)

MEDITATE : YES (3) / NO (26)

FOLLOW A PLANT BASED DIET: YES (6) / NO (23)

EXPERIENCE ANY STRESS: YES (6) / NO (12)

SPEND TIME STRETCHING: YES (2) / NO (27)

So what does this all mean exactly? As I’m looking back over the past month here are some of the things I’m reflecting on.

SUCCESSES: I love the mental health questions incorporated into Whoop, and I’m doing ok in this department. Over the past 30 days, I’ve generally felt “in control of my life” and a “sense of purpose.”

These questions are invaluable to me, and they should be to you too. Having a sense of purpose is why we get out of bed every morning (or don’t). It’s why I pour my energy into Salted Spirit, to inspire others like you reading to prioritize your own health and wellness, so you can fuel the flame of your own passions.

ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT: One of the areas I’m excited to improve upon is eating more of a plant based diet. My husband is a meat eater so when we cook dinner together it’s easier to make chicken in the air fryer than it is to prep my own plant based meal.

I admit this is pure laziness. I’ve committed to more meal planning and am slowly working plant based meals in each week. Eating less meat is a big step towards my personal commitment to combat climate change. You have to have a big ‘why’ when it comes to making a change or sacrifice like this.

I surf nearly every day and don’t spend nearly enough time stretching. I’m committing to this 3x each week going forward, along with more consistent meditation. I’ve fallen away from my meditation practice (2x / day for 20 minutes each), and now that I have a baseline without it, I want to see how building meditation back in will impact my Whoop data, so will pick this back up next month.

I CLEARLY HAVE A LOVE AFFAIR WITH ALCOHOL AND COFFEE. After drinking alcohol every day essentially the past 3 months, (thanks COVID) my husband and I decided to take a break from alcohol on August 20th. According to Whoop, alcohol can stay in your system and affect your Whoop data, sleep and recovery even 3-4 days after you’ve had that last drink. I have a complex love affair with alcohol, and plan to do future posts and podcasts on the topic. In the meantime, here is a great WHOOP podcast talking about the effects of alcohol.

SO, WHY WHOOP TO BEGIN WITH?

Here’s the deal, I pushed this off for a full year because I couldn’t justify the $30 / month. But after years of struggling with fatigue and wanting answers, I finally committed. I was tired of waking up each morning after clocking 8+ hours of sleep and feeling well, tired.

What I quickly uncovered is that it’s not about how long you sleep, it’s about the quality of your sleep, and everything in between. Yeah, yeah, yeah we all know about nutrition, exercise and alcohol, but let me tell you, it changes when you have your own body DATA.

Do you know the crap that I can easily spend $30 on, that don’t contribute to my health? Well, alcohol for starters. So sacrificing two bottles of cheap wine from Trader Joes easily pays for my monthly Whoop membership.

Why am I so stoked about Whoop?

My mission at Salted Spirit is to promote wellness for waterpeople. Selfishly, I want us all to be well, is that too much to ask? After I used Whoop for seven days, I immediately reached out to Whoop Partnerships and asked for a discount code for my community. I wanted to shout it from the rooftops, and I don’t take affiliate links or product pushes lightly. In fact, I’ve never even had sponsors on my podcast because I’m so picky, so when I find something I truly believe in, you better believe I will hustle it.

So if you’re looking to try Whoop out for a month, I’m stoked to share a personal discount code with you for being part of the Salted Spirit community. You can access it here and get your first month free. You can also cancel after 30 days without charge! Whoop Whoop! Pun intended. I don’t like to be cornered into things either.

And if Whoop isn’t your thing, that’s cool and thanks for reading anyway! I hope I’ve inspired you to take one positive step towards a better you tomorrow.

Lastly if you do sign up for Whoop, please DM me as we have a private Salted Spirit Whoop community where we share tips and tricks and also have a monthly virtual accountability meeting.

Cheers to good health, and happy surfing!
